Introduction to 3 Types of Molybdenum Alloys

Pure molybdenum has the advantages of high melting point, good thermal conductivity, and small thermal expansion coefficient. Molybdenum alloy is a non-ferrous alloy composed of molybdenum as the matrix and other elements are added. This article mainly introduces Molybdenum single-crystal alloy, Molybdenum rhenium alloy, and Titanium zirconium molybdenum (TZM) alloy.

Molybdenum singl-crystal alloy

Molybdenum single crystal alloy has the advantages of the low tough-brittle transition temperature, no high temperature and low-temperature grain boundary damage, good compatibility with nuclear materials, and stable high-temperature performance, which can significantly improve the stability, reliability, and working life of components. Thus molybdenum single crystal alloy is widely used in high-tech fields such as electronics, machinery, and nuclear energy industries.

Molybdenum rhenium alloy

Due to the so-called “rhenium effect”, the properties of the molybdenum rhenium alloy are greatly improved, so that the strength, plasticity, and weldability of the alloy are simultaneously improved, and the alloy has a low tough-brittle transition temperature resistance. Therefore, molybdenum rhenium alloys have been widely used in the aerospace and electronics industries. Studies have shown that   11% to 50% rhenium has the best performance, and molybdenum-rhenium alloy with 40% to 50% rhenium is more widely used.

Titanium zirconium molybdenum (TZM) alloy

The TZM alloy is a superalloy formed by adding a certain amount of titanium and zirconium to molybdenum. TZM alloy has the advantages of high melting point, high strength, good elastic modulus, small coefficient of linear expansion, low vapor pressure, good electrical and thermal conductivity, strong corrosion resistance, and good mechanical properties at high temperature.

TZM alloy is widely used in many fields:

① It exhibits good mechanical properties under high temperature and high pressure, and it is widely used in military industry, such as gas distribution valve body, rocket nozzle, gas pipeline, nozzle throat lining in torpedo engine;

② Because of its corrosion resistance to metal liquids, it is used as the main axis (platinum-rhodium coated) of the glass furnace stirrer on the color picture tube glass shell production line;

③ It has a high melting point and can therefore be used as a die casting material for black or non-ferrous metals, as well as a perforated plug for seamless stainless steel tubing;

④ TZM alloy is widely used as a furnace wall of a high-temperature furnace and a heat shield of a hot isostatic press;

⑤ It is used in the electrical and electronic industry as a tube cathode, a gate, a high voltage rectifying element, etc.

⑥ It is used as a radiation hood, support frame, heat exchanger, rails, etc. on nuclear energy equipment.
